LEADER'S WORDS

By Grant Lannon, Squadron Leader

We continue to get the Rose in shape and have a good turnout of workers to accomplish the loving care she needs. We finally got the check for the Randolph AFB Airshow. The maintenance costs are within reason and those of you who heard the financial report at the last meeting know the progress we have made in our accounts. Howard has been busy scheduling the next season and it will take all of us to make it a success. Fortunately, we have an airplane that exudes involvement. There are people in training to provide supervised maintenance and some are also completing the requirements to be the vital third crewmember-the Flight Mechanic. For those of you who were in mourning because we were going to do ground school on Valentines Day, we have decided to move it to Sunday, the 15th (of the same weekend). That means you can make sure your soul-mate is happy and then miss church. If neither is a factor, you can come work on the Rose on Saturday and attend our annual ground school on the Rose the next day. As a minor side note, I now have my Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate from the FAA. Hopefully, that means that the second IP checkride I take in the Rose will make me fully qualified to check out other crewmembers and we can do that locally. At any rate, if any of you pilots need a Flight Review, I will also honor the tradition that Howard set for CAF members-it is free. Don't forget to bring any designs you have for this years T-shirt to the meeting.

Yellow Rose Cheers to you, Grant

Minutes of the January 13, 2004 Meeting of the Yellow Rose Squadron

By Dave Howard, Squadron Adjutant

The regular squadron meeting was held at San Marcos in the Centex Hangar Break Room. Grant Lannon called the meeting to order at 1758. Other officers present were XO, Treasurer, Adjutant, Maintenance, PX, and Publicity. Nineteen members attended. Minutes from the November meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter.

REPORTS

Adjutant: Membership renewals are due now. Dues ($50) should be sent to the Treasurer ASAP. Please put your CAF colonel ID # on the check so that it can be added to our records.

Operations: Grant reported in Howard's absence. The Yuma show now appears doubtful as they have failed to respond to our messages. The Ground School for flight crews and wannabes will be held on Valentine's Day, 14 February. This year's Doolittle Raiders' Reunion will be held in Tucson during 15-18 April. Estimated total flying time is 11 hours. Members' shares would be about $750 each, since there is currently no fuel sponsor. Nine members indicated a desire to go.

Finance: December's beginning balance was $41,160. Net deposits and disbursements was $2,574, leaving a December ending balance of $43,734. January activity to date has netted $476. Payables are $340. Expected near-term expenses include $6,000 for cylinders, an $11,000 transferal to the engine replacement fund Money Market account, $3,000 for PX replenishment, and $10,000 to HQ for annual fees. Projected January ending balance including payables and expected expenses is $13,870. Balance in the Aircraft Account is $35,966.

Maintenance: The B inspection continues. Left engine cylinder #11 is being replaced, to be followed by #6. The Left Main Gear hydraulic actuator cylinder has been changed and the core sent to Aerotrader for overhaul. < The nose gear hydraulic timing valve is leaking and causing the drip from the "football" antenna housing. The right waist gunner seat intercom pushbutton was replaced. Broken headsets are being repaired, and hanger straps are being installed at all crew positions.

Safety: Bob Gardner is our latest newly certified Flight Mechanic. Jerry Taylor scheduled a Flight Mechanics' meeting at the hangar for 24 January.

PX: Tom thanked everyone for help during the inventory. He expects to order soon for the 2004 season. At Mike Colaluca's suggestion, the PX containers will soon be marked by major category, i.e. t-shirts, display cases, etc. as an aid to locating stock.

Announcements / New Business

The Squadron is working with Brian Cumby and the Austin Bar Association in a charity auction of 5 rides in the Rose.

The Adopt-an-Airport program project announcements are expected soon for the San Marcos Airport. Four projects are expected.

Ken Udcoff is a new flying sponsor. He has also donated an Apollo GPS. Bob Adams at McKee has donated installation services.

The topic of displaying sponsor's names on the Rose, possibly on the bomb bay doors, was discussed. Ron Dietes , Tim Black, and Mike Renck were appointed to a committee to provide a recommendation.

The CAF Code Bravo program to allow the squadron to offer 5 new memberships with $100 initiation fees has been extended through July 17th. The Rose has 3 spots remaining.

Judy McMillan announced that a contest is being conducted to design a new t-shirt. Rough designs are requested by February 3rd

A coordinator is needed for the Friends of the Rose auxiliary support group.

The Squadron has secured several Centennial of Flight medallions, engraved with the squadron name, for presentation to major contributors.

Bob Gardner asked for photo releases from any one who provides the squadron with photos for our use.

The meeting was adjourned at 1853.

MAINTENANCE MATTERS

(Maintenance really does matter!)

By Ron Dietes, Squadron Maintenance Officer

As all of you know, the Rose is down for the "B" inspection and I wanted to give all the folks that come out and help and BIG THANK YOU.  The inspection is going well and we have replaced the number 11 cylinder on the left engine and are starting to work on number 6 on the right engine.  We replaced the pushrod tube hoses on all the rear cylinders on the left engine and hopefully we will have time to do the same thing for the right engine.  The seals and packings for the hydraulic leak in the nose wheel well are on order from AeroTrader and we should have them early next week.  In plenty of time to get them installed and another gear retract check performed.  Unless we find a problem on the right engine, we should be able to meet the airshow schedule for Brownsville.

ANOTHER B-25 ICON GOES WEST

Funeral services were held on January 22, 2004 for Travis Hoover, retired Colonel, USAF. Hoover was the last survivor and pilot of aircraft #2 that participated in the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942. In declining health for nearly a year, Hoover died on Saturday, January 17. He will be missed.

Of the 80 men who participated in the raid, only 17 are still alive.

GROUND SCHOOL

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15, FROM 0900-1700. THERE WILL BE A FEE, BUT THE AMOUNT HAS YET TO BE DETERMINED.

NEW YELLOW ROSE MEMBERS

By Judy McMillan, Squadron Finance Offiecr

Greg Young is our newest member-his membership form was received on 12/26. Greg lives in San Antonio and is a retired San Antonio Police Officer. Greg is willing to put in time and to learn what it takes to clean, maintain and prepare aircraft for shows-exactly the type of new member the Rose depends on. He is also willing to travel with the airplane. Sounds like we need to get him in the next Ground School session. Be sure to make Greg feel welcome when he is at the hanger!

Ed Mickley, a member of the 3rd Coast Squadron, is a new YR Squadron member. Ed lives in Corpus Christi with his wife Donna. Ed is in marketing and has his own company, Integrity Communications. Ed is a pilot and an active CAF member. Welcome Ed.

Aubrey Hair, a former YR Squadron member, has renewed his membership for 2004. Aubrey lives in McKinney, TX, with his wife, Barbara. Welcome back.

Note from Judy: When we talk to someone about joining the CAF, we need to make an effort to give them a CAF application with the YR Squadron written in as the unit they want to be affiliated with.  We forget that the squadron gets $50 back from each new member.
