SQUADRON NEWS ALERT

From Grant Lannon

I regret to inform you that Monday, Ron and I received notification from the Executive Director of the CAF that we were both prohibited from flying CAF airplanes because we had violated the CAF regulation prohibiting flight over water.  We are scheduled to meet the Flying Safety Board at the spring staff conference on April 23rd.  At that point, the board has the authority to decide whether to continue the grounding and for how long.  Ron and I sincerely apologize for the decisions we made that caused this to happen.  We feel very bad and are despondent about letting down the squadron.  We have been attempting to find alternative pilots for our heavy schedule. Unfortunately, the shortage is acute and we will most certainly have to cancel or modify some appearances.  The first is this weekend at Tyndall.  It appears that we have a crew to fly the Rose the following weekend at Eglin.

Meanwhile, within the unit we will be analyzing what happened to cause the violation and will be proposing methods to ensure that it does not happen to our squadron again.  I am sure, that as in the past, you will all be scheming to make lemonade out of lemons and we will continue to be an “E for Excellence” squadron.

LEADER'S WORDS

By Grant Lannon, Squadron Leader

We have been scrambling to find crewmembers since the grounding.  On the bright side, we have met new friends on the phone all over the country.  It will be a difficult time until the decision of the Flight Safety Board at the Midland staff conference on the 23rd of April (and maybe even after that).  We will need the help of everyone in the squadron to get us through.  We have canceled both Florida airshows and are worried more about our customers than ourselves.  Our word has been our greatest asset over the last two years and we hope there is some understanding from the organizers.

We have coverage for Burnet and Barksdale.  Many of us will be in Midland the weekend of the Barksdale (Shreveport,LA) event on the 23-25th of April. We will need volunteers to go with the Missouri Wing flight crew and take care of the Rose while she is in Shreveport.

There is a Young Eagles rally at the hanger on the 17th and this will be another opportunity to sell Rose unique items and give cockpit tours. This particular group has parents who are very active in fund raising in the Austin area and we want to educate them about the CAF facility.  The Young Eagles event coincides with a flying event for disabled children (called Challenge Air) on the same day so there will be many kids and their parents at the hanger.  Please come out and lend a hand.  Show time is 9AM and if you don’t plan to get dirty with hanger work, wear your Yellow Rose shirts.

Finally, the next day, Sunday the 18th, there will be a ground training session for all pilots and Flight Mechanics.  The session will start at 1PM.  This is part of our corrective action which will be submitted to the FSB so we request that you be there to receive additional training on weather avoidance, the new GPS equipment, and CAF regulations.  AGAIN, ALL PILOTS AND FLIGHT MECHANICS (including those in training) ARE REQUESTED TO BE THERE.  Of course, we welcome anyone who wants to attend the session because we want everyone on the airplane to have as much information as possible.

Until next time, Grant

MAINTENANCE MATTERS

(Maintenance really does matter!)

By Ron Dietes, Squadron Maintenance Officer

The Rose continues to perform well.  The Brownsville show is now over and we are looking forward to the next shows.  The oil temperature gauge has been repaired and we have replaced some frayed wires on the left engine oil temperature probe.  In addition the Rose has been washed by Jim Liles and she is ready for Eglin this weekend.  We have also installed the new batteries so the hard starting problem we experienced at Brownsville should now be corrected.  Thanks to all that have helped get the Rose ready.  I cannot do it without you.

MEETING NOTICE

Sunday, April 18, 2004 at 1:00 PM, there will be a training session for all pilots and flight mechanics, as well as anyone else who wants to attend.

MINUTES of the March 9th, 2004 Meeting of the Yellow Rose Squadron

By Dave Howard, Squadron Adjutant

The regular squadron meeting was held at San Marcos in the Centex Hangar Ready Room.  Ron Dietes called the meeting to order at 1804.  Other officers present were Finance, Adjutant, Ops, Safety, PX, and Publicity. Twenty-one members attended.  New members present were Greg Young and Jim Motheral.  Minutes from the February meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter.

REPORTS

Operations:  An updated schedule was sent out today in Excel format.  It will also be posted on the website.  Little Rock and Dyess are now confirmed.  We have traded rotation time at Midland during the 4th quarter to avoid having to schedule it in August.  The Brownsville trip sheet is distributed.  The Florida tour still has one opening.  We will be at Tyndall (Panama City) the last weekend in March, at Pensacola on the following Monday-Wednesday, overnight and fuel at Crestview, and then at Eglin on Thursday-Sunday.  The Doolittle trip begins on Tax Day Eve and stops in Mesa, AZ to join the other B25s arriving in Tucson in time for coverage on the evening news.  Seats are full, with members kicking in $750 each plus meals and lodging to cover costs. We will fly to Burnet on April 9th for the show on the 10th.

Finance:  February's beginning balance was $37,224.  Net deposits and disbursements cost $7596, leaving a February ending balance of $29,628.  March activity to date has cost $1283.  Payables are $16,200, including an $11,000 transfer to the money market account, other CAF insurance, hangar rent, and repairs.  Projected March ending balance including payables is $12,145.  Balance in the Aircraft Account is $39,366.  Judy remarked that the insurance now provides only half as much hull coverage with twice the deductible as last year, and the CAF has agreed to forgo any aircraft damage claims for this year.  For our education, she reported that the PX accounts for “aircrew” shirts and caps separately, because they are stocked and sold at cost only as a service to our members.  Also, for those air shows which claim to have a 24-hour no-tax permit, we must get written confirmation to avoid remitting sales tax.  Finally, some air shows have contracts with a master concessionaire, and some of those prohibit our PX if it sells the same items they do.   In those instances, we add $1000 to our contract to offset the loss.

Maintenance: The B inspection is nearly done.  The pilot’s and co-pilot’s seats are ready to be reinstalled.  We need to do a landing gear retract test. One co-pilot brake cable needs to be replaced.  After that we’ll adjust vacuum, wash down everything, do the maintenance flight, and complete the logbooks.

Safety:  A Flight Mechanic’s training session is scheduled for 20 March from 9-11.  Jerry also reported that safety is a major concern in CAF this year.  We must avoid accidents.  Be especially careful on and around the aircraft.

PX:  Tommy reported that the PX is ready for Brownsville.  A list for restocking notes is in the cash box. At each show, anyone noticing a sold-out item should add it to that list.  Pricing of crew items is as follows:  Caps $8.50, White shirts $18.50, and Green shirts $21.75.  Prices are also listed on the locker door.

Announcements / New Business

Mike Colaluca reported that the Adopt-an-Airport group cleaned the area around the front gate this month.  They also plan to set up a promotion table at the Goode Nursery open house on April 3rd.

The CAF Florida Wing has appealed for patches to decorate a new area.

Nominations for Headquarters Board members are sought in Midland.

Sick Call

Tommy Koepke is recovering from shoulder surgery, and Chuck Clayton is awaiting final diagnosis of the leg pain he has been enduring.  Our thoughts are with you both.

The meeting was adjourned at 1847.

We look forward to the participation of all new members and hope they will speak up, step up, and pitch in.

SAFETY NOTES

By Jerry Taylor, Squadron Safety Officer

Saturday, March 20 dawned misty and dreary, but it did not stop some of us from a scheduled flight mechanics meeting at the hangar.  Even though the group was small, the exchange of ideas and concerns was wide spread.  Safety was on the minds of all, and how each of us could improve our jobs to provide a safer environment in the “Yellow Rose” operations.  From the most experienced to the newest trainee, ideas were tossed out and discussed by everyone.  It was mainly a “buzz” session, but no one left without some benefit.

Mike Colaluca brought in the new hand signals poster for our inspection.  It is now on display in the hangar for the benefit of all.

Dear Colonels.

During our Membership Meeting in October we will be electing four members to the General Staff for a three-year term of office.  At the Winter Staff Advisory Meeting in Midland, the General Staff Appointed Col. Floyd Houdashell, Col. Kenneth English, and Col. Richard Russell as your 2004 Nominating Committee. The purpose of this Committee is to solicited applicants for the General Staff and put the "Best Qualified" Cols. on the Ballot for an election to be held at the Membership Meeting in October during Airshow 2004. The General Staff positions become effective on January 1, 2005.

This letter is asking for your assistance in locating these nominees from the membership. For those in attendance at the Winter Staff Conference I know that you are acutely aware of the many challenges facing the CAF in the future and that "business as usual" is not an option for our continued success. The members of the Nominating Committee are requesting your suggestions in locating individuals with the time, insights, business acumen, knowledge of the CAF, and the desire to help the CAF prosper and grow into the future.

If you feel that you have a member in your unit who fits these qualifications your Nominating Committee would like to review their qualifications with them. Please forward your suggested names to Keith Lawrence at Headquarters or to any Nominating Committee member listed below.

ROSE TRAVELS AND ACTIVITIES

The Brownsville Air Show Trip

12-15 March 2004

By Dave Howard

Our departure schedule was 1400 on Friday, but at 1100 it didn’t look good.  It was raining!  As the crew was “trickling” in we were entertained by a videotaping session conducted by USAA.  Local Raider Dick Cole, co-pilot for Jimmy Doolittle, was being interviewed in the cockpit of the Rose!  After that, Sandy Sansing, Bill Powers, and Grant were interviewed as a group in front of the Lexington’s jeep.  You never know what you might see at the Centex hangar.

The Tora bunch left around 1230 between showers.  By 1330 things were looking better, and we were only slightly behind schedule when the Rose took off.  Grant was PIC, Ron was SIC, and Mike Francis was Flight engineer.  After we were leveled off, Ken Udcoff took Ron’s place to get some flying time.  As we flew south it was hazy, and we flew above a low scattered layer and below a much higher overcast layer.  The view from the nose was awesome, as usual.  South of Corpus Christi the lower cloud layer started to tighten up, so we dropped below it and the view really got interesting.  Soon we could see the beach and the Intracoastal Waterway, and flew along beside it over sand dunes and vacation hideouts. The weather was decent at Brownsville and all too soon we were parked on the ramp (the first of many parking places!)  The famous wipe down was done in no time, because our hard work this winter sealed almost all the leaks!  We unloaded the PX and trucked it inside the hangar to our tiny booth space.  Too small, I pointed out, so in grateful appreciation for my powers of observation they appointed me PX Poobah for the trip!  Not to worry, the coordinator assured us that we could expand in the morning.  Reassured, we checked out the famous bar on the ramp.  There we watched the local TV news on the tube as they televised live shots on the ramp outside in front of the Rose.  Some of us had a cool one or two and nibbled on our generous host’s array of veggies and appetizers.  Howard secured a soccer mom’s dream van, so we all piled in and headed for the motel. Jim Lyles managed to get us there without getting lost in spite of 6 navigators to help him.  We dropped the bags in our rooms and drove down the road to Tony Roma’s for dinner.  Finally it was back to the motel where some of us checked out the bar, then crashed; and some just crashed on the first pass.

Saturday morning we enjoyed the complementary breakfast buffet at the motel and then headed for the field.  Half of us prepped the Rose for cockpit tours and the air show flights, and half began setting up the PX.  The friendly jewelry shrew adjacent to our booth immediately complained about our table setup; but we had friends in high places and soon we were in a triple-width space with no neighbors and a restaurant freezer behind the curtain in case we got hungry.  The crowd entered the ramp area through the hangar, passing our booth first on arrival and last on departure.  The weather was threatening both days of the show, which undoubtedly reduced attendance.  Even so, we had about $1000 in sales.  Many thanks to the Poobah’s assistants, who never deserted and ran the PX like pros.  Sunday the PX team even included Centex PX veterans Ginny and Harold Miller.

Saturday night Ron directed us to Garcia’s Restaurant in Matamoros for dinner.  Having gone to high school in the Valley many years ago, I wasn’t expecting a restaurant of that caliber in a border town.  What a treat.

Sunday was much like Saturday, except that the weather looked even gloomier at first.  On both days the show went off without a hitch and our Rose was flawless.  The missing man formation was particularly moving because it was dedicated to those servicemen from the Valley who had died in Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The formation was made up of the Rose, a T6, a T28, and an SB2C.  It approached the crowd head-on from across the field, and then the SB2C pulled just before they reached the ramp.  A number of family members in attendance were moved and expressed gratitude for the honor and remembrance we left with them.

Sunday afternoon we couldn’t get a decent enough forecast to guarantee VMC to San Marcos, so we had to stay for the survivors’ party.   The Blastards’ ladies toyed with the Tora pukes for a time, but soon declared that “bomber crews need hugs, too” and jumped in our laps.  (We need to figure out what to do about those pictures.)  Finally, it was back to Tony Roma’s and an unplanned night at the motel.

Monday morning it poured during breakfast.  Not a good sign.  Brownsville intersections were starting to flood as we drove to the CAF hangar to wait for a break.  Some Marine pilots were there waiting to leave as well.  It seems that someone forgot to rent a start cart for the Marines’ E6 Prowler and they can’t use a 28 volt one, so they were a little bent.  The Valley Wing folks were still on the job, however, keeping us fed with little sandwiches and generally being helpful.  Some of us took the opportunity for a closer look at their museum, one of the best wing museums I’ve seen.  Howard kept up a dialog with the Flight Service Station and learned that conditions at San Marcos were fine, we just had to get an opening between bands of low clouds and showers coming out of Mexico and passing over South Texas.  At last our opportunity occurred at about noon   The Rose took off just a little before the Tora guys left.  This time Ron was PIC, Grant was SIC, and Mike got to keep his job as Flight Engineer.  I got to go up to the nose again to “navigate”.  After we leveled off, Grant gave up his seat to Ken.  The clouds dropped down a lot in the “no mans land” between Brownsville and Corpus Christi, so we had to maintain VMC by passing Corpus Christi on the east.  North of Corpus Christi we turned toward San Marcos and, finding the good weather we had been promised, flew straight home.

LEAD ACTIVITIES

By Ron Dietes

The Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was held at the Centex hangar on Saturday March 27th from 9am until 2pm.  I have to tell you in my opinion, the event was a smashing success.  Since the Rose was not able to travel to Tyndall AFB, we set up a small PX under the wing and did cockpit tours.  Although we only had three people to help, we did manage to put about 200 children thru the Rose.  My thanks to Bob Gardner and Judy McMillan.  Without them, we would not have been able to do the cockpit tours and generate money for the Rose.  But the PX sales were sparse.  We only sold two posters. Next year we will do better.  Thanks also to Grant for helping get us started.  Since I was out by the Rose, I was not able to get into the hangar for the those events, but from the many tables and chairs, it had to be crowded.  All in all, I think everyone that was able to be there enjoyed themselves.  The lunch was excellent and the many smiles I saw on the kids, definitely made it memorable.  There was one little girl that did the cockpit tour at least four times.  I thought that perhaps she wanted to be a pilot and liked airplanes, but when I asked her she told me she just liked to crawl thru the cannon tunnel.  That sure gave me a chuckle.  So, well done CENTEX.

HANUSA TO REVIEW CAF FLIGHT OPERATIONS

The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) has retained aviation consultant Dick Hanusa to lead implementation of a top-to-bottom safety program to, as CAF board member Doug Rozendaal said, “Send a loud and clear message to the entire CAF that we must change the way we do business if we wish to continue flying our warbirds.” Hanusa will review and evaluate CAF regulations, safety program, staffing and its accident/incident history, then recommend changes based on industry best-practices. Hanusa has been in aviation for 34 years, including an 18-year FAA career where he served as an operations inspector and operations unit supervisor.
