Annual Christmas Party

and Friends and Family Fly Day

AT FREDERICKSBURG and SAN MARCOS

The annual Yellow Rose Squadron Christmas party will be held at the Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg on Saturday, December 9, 2006.  The Rose and other planes will be available on Saturday afternoon to fly from San Marcos to Fredericksburg or you can drive.  If you want to fly, you need to make prior arrangements.  Saturday afternoon will be free time, then a cocktail hour prior to dinner, dinner will be held in the officer’s club, and following the dinner, fellowship in the hotel bar.

Sunday morning, the schedule is to return to San Marcos before noon and participate in the Squadron lunch and the “Friends and Family Fly Day”.  Briefing for the fly day is scheduled to begin at 1300 hours with flying immediately thereafter, continuing until all who want to have flown or dark arrives, whichever comes first.

Because of the party and fly day, there will be no official Squadron meeting during the month of December.

LEADER'S WORDS

By Ron Dietes, Squadron Leader

Another year has passed and I just wanted to once again thank everyone for their hard work and for giving their time to the Rose.  The Rose is mechanically doing well and we have made some very positive gains this past year.  We are in the process of getting the engines from Galveston to San Marcos and we are slowly moving forward with the Doolittle Reunion event.

However, it saddens me that we lost two of our members this past year.  Jack Hart and Richard Garcia will truly be missed.  I think life goes by so fast that we sometimes do not realize the treasures we have until they are no longer with us.  We also wish Mike Colaluca a speedy recovery.

The maintenance folks have been steadily working on the Rose getting her ready for the Squadron Christmas Party and Fly Day.  There are still seats available on the Rose for the flight to Fredericksburg, so if think you want to go along let me know and I will add your name to the crew.  In case you have been on another planet, the dates are December 9th and 10th.  Tim has requested that you send your money to him prior to the Fredericksburg trip, so he can get the arrangements settled with the hotel and save the last minute issue’s that occurred last year.  The cost for the dinner is $23.50 per person.  You are responsible for yourhotel room when you check out of the Hangar hotel.  Several folks are driving up, so we should have plenty of transportation for the trip into town for lunch and shopping.  By the way the hotel reduced the cost of the dinner room.  That was a pleasant surprise as the squadron is covering that cost.  Don’t forget to bring a covered dish for the lunch on Sunday in the hangar prior to the flying.  This year we will be having Craig’s meat loaf.

For those of you that were not able to attend the November Squadron meeting, the elections were held with the following results:

Squadron Leader: Ron Dietes
Maintenance Officer: Jim Liles
Operations Officer: Dave Howard
Adjutant: Pat Moore

Of course, the results of the election are not official until any absentee ballots have been counted.  Our Election Committee chairperson (Ed Liscomb) will announce the official results at the January meeting.  Personally, I want to thank the members that ran for office in the squadron. It is a serious commitment.  I don’t think anyone realizes how much time it takes until you actually have done the job.  Remember you are not in this alone.  You have the whole squadron to help you, should you ever need assistance.  All you have to do is ask.

I realize the Holiday season has begun and that we are all busy rushing around to get our holiday shopping done and the house cleaned for family, but please do not forget the tremendous task we have ahead of us.  The Doolittle Reunion date is getting closer as each day passes and we still do not have any major monetary sponsors.  The bright spot in this effort is the ABC Event Planners.  But, let me caution each and every one of you, the event planners cannot do it without us.  Every letter we send and contact we make requires committed follow up.  All of us need to work together for this event to happen.  Although we will not have an official squadron meeting in December, there will be a Doolittle Reunion meeting at 6pm in the Centex briefing room.  Please come and give us your input.  We want this reunion to be the best reunion they have ever had.

Letty and I wish each any every one of you a Joyous Holiday Season and a Very Happy New Year.

OPERATIONS REPORT

By Grant Lannon, Squadron Operations Officer

The airshow season is truly winding down and the only events we have left are “Camo Santa” and the Christmas party at Fredericksburg and San Marcos.  There should be a report of the DeRidder mission elsewhere in the newsletter.  On the night of December 14th, Camo (Camouflaged) Santa will get off the Yellow Rose at the Kerrville Airport to the delight of many military supporters at a dinner and kids event.  Since we cannot fly at night, another aircraft will be put up to make noises in the night sky and then land.  The Rose will taxi to the event from behind a hanger and Santa will get off.

RIDE FOR HIRE

The KB-25 was flown to Stinson to fly fuel leftover from the Lackland airshow to San Marcos.  For those of you who are not familiar with the designation “KB”, it stands for “tanker/bomber.”  The fuel was flown back to San Marcos and offloaded from the Rose for use in all the Veteran’s Day flyovers by the other aircraft in the hanger.  Some fuel was left on the Rose for the remaining activities in 2006.  The person who donated the leftover fuel was Gene Jensen of Check Six Aviation at Stinson.  At the dinner dance, two people from San Antonio wanted to ride in the B-25 with friends and agreed to a minimum fee of $1250.  We agreed to give the rides out of Stinson on Monday.  As it turned out, their friends in their construction company could not make it and, with their permission, we gave free rides to Gene and two of his “Check Six” workers when we picked up the fuel.  If you want proof of “what goes around comes around”, I don’t think this is a better example.  Thanks to those of you who manned the Rose outside the CENTEX hanger dinner/dance on November 11th and especially, Greg Young, who booked the San Antonio people.  It is up to all of us to market rides on the Rose whenever possible.  So far, the rides have generated income without undo wear on the aircraft.  We will continue to monitor the program in the future.

PX REPORT & More

By Greg Young, PX Officer

The airshow season is over with and the PX is finishing up with a low inventory.  December will see me doing the dollar and cents inventory for Judy.  January and February will be ordering time based upon what airshows are scheduled by that time.  It was my goal to have a low inventory at the end of the year and thanks to all of those who helped with the PX, that goal appears to have been met.  It is great to have the PX be a profitable contribution to keeping the Yellow Rose flying.

Although during this reporting period, there were no airshows to speak of, the Rose continued to be busy.  One of her missions turned her into the world's first KB25.  Thanks to Gene Jensen of Check Six Aviation the Yellow Rose squadron was able to obtain approximately 1300 gallons fuel at no cost due to a surplus of aviation fuel from the Lackland Airshow.  The Yellow Rose was turned into a tanker by being flown to Stinson Field in San Antonio where her fuel tanks were topped off.  The first time, Ron, Grant, and Jim brought the Rose back.  After this, she was partially defueled in the hangar with the fuel being pumped into waiting barrels.

This fuel was in turn used to refuel most of the planes in the hangar and some of the utility vehicles.  The Rose returned to Stinson later to get the remainder of the fuel.  This type of mission was reminiscent of World War II when Consolidated Liberators and other aircraft were used to carry fuel across the famous Hump in the CBI theater to supply the airfields in China.  Another Rose mission was a flyover to honor Bill Barker.  This was a local mission with Grant, Ron, Jim, and Greg crewing the Rose which led a flyover consisting of Ron Iberg in Triple Nickel and Joe Ensminger in his T34.  Bill Barker was the guy who really kept the hangar looking sharp for several years and it was appropriate for us in the Rose Squadron to lead the flyover to honor him as he passed away recently.  Bill was a Navy veteran of such ships as the USS Missouri and as always we salute the service that all veterans have given to our country.  The second tanker mission to Stinson also accomplished several other things.  Grant, Ron, Jim, and Greg were the crew on this trip which also served as a combination hospitality and appreciation gesture.  We had on board the new San Marcos airport manager, Mr. Johns and the interim airport caretaker, Shawn Wolfshohl, who has been very helpful during his short tenure in charge. Needless to say, both guys were thrilled to fly on our Girl.  Once we arrived at Stinson, the Rose went on a "Ride for Hire" flight and we were able to also show our appreication to Gene Jensen and a couple of his employees for the fuel that we had obtained.  They were able to fly on the Rose also.  Last but not least, the Rose was the static star of the Hangar Dance held on November 11.  She attracted many attendees who were able to get cockpit tours. It is always rewarding to hear the various comments made about the Rose when people visit.

MINUTES of the November 14th, 2006 MEETING of the YELLOW ROSE SQUADRON

By Dave Howard, Squadron Adjutant

Theregular squadron meeting was held at San Marcos in the Centex Hangar Ready Room.  Squadron Leader, Ron Dietes, called the meeting to order at 1800.  Other officers present were Ops, Finance, Adjutant, Safety, PX, and Publicity.  Twenty-one members attended.  (Also observing quietly in the back of the room were Julie Clayton and Millie Reeves.)  The previous meeting’s Minutes were approved as printed in the Briefings.

Announcements

Ron reminded that we have the Fredericksburg party coming up on December 9th, with the squadron fly-day and luncheon on the 10th.

Ron reported that Check Six Aviation at Stinson Field in San Antonio has donated 1200 gallons of fuel to the squadron.  The Rose did tanker duty, making two trips to ferry it back.  She thanked them with rides for the employees.

Ron announced that the annual B25 ground school will be held here in February.

Chuck Clayton explained that the desserts we enjoyed exclusively at the Yellow Rose tables during the hangar dance were prepared and donated by Mrs. Roma Cook, and Mrs. Annie Mendiola.  A thank you note has been sent from the squadron to each of them.

Reports

Operations:  Grant encouraged everyone to work at selling rides on the Rose, as we did at the dance.  The minimum donation is $1200 for up to 4 people.  A 5th (person) can go along for $300.  One of the trips to Stinson was paid for by a pair who had expected two friends to come along, but wound up sharing their ride instead with the Check Six guys.  It’s great to have such support!

The Yankee Air Museum wants us to come to their air show next July.  The trip is a long one for us, so there was discussion about putting so much time on the engines for one show.  A vote was taken, with strong agreement to do the show.

The Kerrville Camo Santa appearance is December 14th.  Two double rooms will be provided.

Grant announced a Young Eagles fly-day at the hangar this next Saturday, the 11th.  Most of the pilots are squadron members.

Finance:  Judy presented the monthly financial report.  A motion was made to accept the report as read.  The motion was seconded and the motion carried.

Maintenance:  Jim reported no new maintenance issues.  Friday he plans to wash the engines, and Saturday we will wash the airframe.  He passed around the brake part that had caused the leak on the left main brake assembly.<  Apparently the part was damaged by rough handling as the brake hub was stabbed back onto the axle.  That’s hard to avoid, but avoid it we must!

Safety/NewsletterJerry said there are no new safety issues.  He requested that we get the newsletter material to him early this month to allow for the Thanksgiving holiday.

PXGreg reported that our PX inventory has made a soft landing, with very little residual.  He will wait to re-order until next year’s air show schedule begins to take shape.

PublicityBob Gardner announced that the book signing held to kick off the Raiders’ Reunion publicity campaign got magazine coverage in San Antonio Scene.

Sick Call:  Mike Colaluca has been in the hospital for surgery to treat a surprise attack of diverticulitis.  He’s doing much better now.

The regular meeting adjourned at 1830.

Elections:  The election committee chairman, Ed Liscomb, conducted the annual election in strict accordance with CAF regulations.  Chuck Clayton’s nominating committee submitted the names of Jim Liles and Dave Howard for the positions of Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer, respectively.  No other nominations were received from the floor, and they were each elected by acclamation.  Nominations of Pat Moore and Julian Serda were provided by the committee for Adjutant, with no additional nominations from the floor.  Pat Moore was elected.  The committee nominated Ron Dietes and Mike Renck for Squadron Leader.  No other nominations were received from the floor.<  After a short statement from each of them, Ron Dietes was elected.

GONE WEST—SAD NEWS

Sad news to report.  We lost another Doolittle Tokyo Raider.  Bill Birch, Bombadier for Crew #11 passed away last week.  We are sad to say that this leaves the count at only 15 Doolittle Tokyo Raiders left living among our history.

DOOLITTLE MEETING

By Ron Dietes

Our monthly Doolittle planning meeting was held on Tuesday, November 14th in the Briefing Room in the Centex hangar.  Members in attendance were Ron and Letty Dietes, Bob Gardner, Jerry Taylor, Jim Liles, Grant Lannon, Judy McMillan, Pat and Charlene Moore, Steve Gladwin, and Greg Young.  The meeting began with Ron and Bob giving a recap of the meeting they had with Any Baby Can and the Event Planners.  The event planners are Wendy Welsh and Melinda Keller from “Outside the Box”.  One purpose of this meeting was to start bringing the event planners up to speed regarding what we have accomplished to date.  Any Baby Can and the event planners will begin the search for possible keynote speakers for our luncheons.  As soon as we determine the speakers and the menus, we can set the ticket prices.  The event planners will also help us with the menu selections and luncheon ticket pricing.  Any Baby Can meetings will now be every 2 weeks instead of once a month.

Allied Sales, Whole Foods and Rush Enterprises have responded to our fundraising requests.  We are pursuing Shell Oil, Southwest, and American Airlines.  Jerry Taylor is awaiting information from the Air Force liaison regarding their assistance with our fundraising efforts.  Please keep Jerry in the loop with any fund raising possibilities you are pursuing.

The Event Planners will begin working to educate the public about the Doolittle Reunion.  Please keep Bob Gardner in the loop with all media contacts so that the information can be coordinated through the ABC Event Planners.  We need to provide a united front so that we do not appear unprofessional.

Steve Gladwin, Ways and Means Chairman, reported that artwork prints are being created especially for our event.  The books that we may offer for sale in the PX was also discussed.

Grant is developing the invitation letter to send out to the B-25 groups.  Our intent is to have sixteen B-25’s come to San Antonio.  It is Grant’s intention to have the letters sent out before our next Doolittle meeting on December 12th.

Greg Young reported that he has security contacts at all the surrounding San Antonio airports and is on standby for further instructions.

We have the joint bank account issues resolved with Midland.

Our next Doolittle meeting will be on Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 6:00p.m. in the Centex Hangar Briefing Room.  Please plan to attend.  Time is getting short.

Yellow Rose Travel and Events

The East Beauregard Parrish Veterans Appreciation Day

By JudyMcMillan

The trip to DeRidder, LA on December 4-5 was another of those experiences you only get on trips on the Yellow Rose.  Ron and Lettie Dietes, Grant Lannon, Mike Francis, Jim Stahl and I flew to the DeRidder airport early on that Saturday.

DeRidder is a small town about 30 miles south of the Toledo Bend Lake Dam in the Piney Woods of Northwest Louisiana—exactly like the Piney Woods of Northeast Texas.  The Rose was invited to participate in a flyover with 2 F-16’s and a B-52 at the East Beauregard Parrish Veterans Appreciation Day on Sunday.  (The F-16’s were from New Orleans and the B-52 was from Barksdale AFB at Shreveport.)  The airport manager told us that for such a small town, DeRidder had a very large airport (built during WWII for the Army Air Corps), but for an airport of its size, they had very little traffic.  You could have counted the weekend traffic volume on one hand.

When the invitation was received, our Operations Officer worked out a plan with the event coordinator for the Rose to arrive the day before the fly over and setup our PX and be available at the airport for cockpit tours and rides.  The problem with the plan was the event coordinator, Jodie.  Jodie was a whirlwind walking.  I know you’ve met the type—part salesman, part PR planner, part good-ole-boy and someone whose mouth worked faster than his thoughts many times.  He promised everyone a lot but his delivery was a different matter.  The promotion for the Rose at the Airport had not been adequate and most residents of the area didn’t know we were there.  We took about 50 people through the Rose, sold a few items and had two paid rides on Sunday.  Many of the visitors were from Ft. Polk that is located a few miles away.

However, it was a beautiful day and we did make some good friends.  Charles and Mackie Poe loaned us a car for the evening (and it was a good thing we had it as I’ll explain below.)  Another new friend, Jim Temple, set up a tab at the nearest convenience store/ liquor store for us and we appreciated that greatly.  We had some good barbecue at Double D’s, the recommended place for dinner and about the only one in the area that we saw.  It was a BYOB and because of our tab at the liquor store, we were able to do that.  We finished out the evening at the VFW for a great Cajun hoedown.

Jodie arranged accommodations for us for no cost and we appreciated that because coming a day early was our request.  Finding them was the event of the weekend.  We stayed in a hotel at a Baptist retreat camp deep in the woods about 20 miles from town.  As one local said, it was so deep in the piney woods that they had to pipe in sunshine.  If you’ve lived in East Texas as I have, you knew what that meant.  With minimal directions we took off in our loaned car to find the hotel for a cleanup before dinner.  It would have been a long walk if someone hadn’t loaned us the car.  I never learned what Jodie was planning for our transportation.  It took quite a while to find it and when we arrived, we learned that there was no staff on site and the keys to our rooms weren’t there—I think they were in Jodie’s pocket wherever he was at that time.

We headed back to town without a shower for Dinner and finally got in touch with Jodie.  He promised that our keys would be there when we returned.  They were and we never found out the cause of the mixup.  The rooms were very nice and clean.  We had a good quiet night—out in the woods without TV.

We were fed a great lunch by the volunteers at the Appreciation Day event before we headed to the Airport Sunday for the flyover.  After the flyover, the Rose returned to the Airport to disembark the Poes, our riders.  We spent about an hour more there (unplanned) because the left engine was acting out and needed some attention.  The guys got the cowling off in minutes and Ron’s inspection found a loose intake tube.  Ron did the repair teetering at the top of a ladder while Mike handed him tools and the rest of us held the ladder.

Repairs finished, we headed for home.  Jodie said he would invite us back and promised better publicity.
